Set24-Q.16-Balance in the checking a/c

by prachich1987 » Tue Dec 14, 2010 10:40 pm
From May 1 to May 30 in the same year, the balance in a checking account increased.
What was the balance in the checking account on May 30?

(1) If, during this period of time, the increase in the balance in the checking
account had been 12 percent, then the balance in the account on May 30 would
have been $504
(2) During this period of time, the increase in the balance in the checking account
was 8 percent.

Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient
Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE
is sufficient.
 EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient

consider x to be the balance on may 1

from statement 1

x+ (12 * x)/100 = 504
112x/100 =504

x = 504 *100/112 = 450 is the balance on may1

from statement 2

8% of 450 = 36

balance on may30 is 450 + 36 = 486

BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE
is sufficient

Looks like we need to question the source of some OAs. I agree with prachich; how can (A) be correct? We can get the balance as of May 1, but we still don't know the actual % increase without using Statement (B).
I'm really old, but I'll never be too old to become more educated.

OA is wrong. The answer must be C. There is no way A can be sufficient here.

We know the concept, Move on.

Thanks
