HELP NEEDED: IMD vs. LBS Sloan MSc?

by TheNewGuy » Mon Sep 20, 2010 12:51 pm
I'm presently considering to join a one-year program at a top-ranked b-school such as IMD (MBA) or LBS (Sloan MSc) in order to be best prepared for new career opportunites in the internet/technology space. I'm 34 yrs old, have got a B.Sc in International Management, 10+ years of international experiences, and managed teams of up to 50 people in the US and EMEA in product management and business development.

How would you compare the two programs with another? I guess content-wise the curriuclum is somewhat similar, and soft-skills/personal development is integral part of both programs, too. Though there is plenty to find about the MBA programs, it seems a bit difficult to learn more about the Sloan Fellowship programs, and to get first hand information. There is hardly anything posted apart from the b-school's own websites.

Given my background, does it make sense to consider a Sloan program or is it somewhat "exotic" and I should rather go for a regular MBA program?

Your input is greatly appreciated!

I have done a fair bit of research on the Sloan programs. LBS looks for avrg 14 yrs experience. I also have 10 yrs exp and they asked me to apply couple of years later. You could send your resume to them for an informal review and they will get back to you in a weeks time. They also directed me to the Dubai LBS Exec MBA. I was little surprised about it as I was looking for a full time program. Maybe it was a way for them to promote this new program at Dubai.

You will have to answer a lot of ques such as before you can decide:

1) Class profile - Sloan has older candidates (avrg 38 yrs i think) who are fairly successful in their field.

2) Are you looking for a career shift.? - Sloan program is mostly for people who have been around but now want to stick to their current industry. Having said that it doesnt mean people dont shift careers after graduating from Sloan program.

3) MBA Vs. M.Sc - At senior levels I dont it makes too much of a difference, but MBA is a more widely accepted degree. M.Sc is more of a specialisation in a certain field.

4) Plus others like region, brand, where would you like to work etc etc.

Sloan is an exclusive program and will give you a strong network. Best thing would be to apply to both and then take a call. And do send your resume to LBS for review.
