Help Identify My Target Schools

by harizd » Fri Jan 10, 2014 10:39 pm
Here's my profile for your consideration -

Demographic - 27/ Indian Male / 6 Yrs of Consulting / Marketing Research Experience

Education - B.E - 70%

GMAT - Target 700 (June-14)

Work Experience -

Leading Consulting Firm - 5 Yrs in Team/Project Management Role

Other aspects -

Started my own company (creative agency and digital marketing) - Managed for about 2 yrs
Fast paced growth within the organization
Marathon Runner
Volunteered at NGO
Photography & Trekking

Just got married and I am looking to complete my MBA within the next 1-2 yrs. Would appreciate if you could specify safe and ambitious schools based on my profile. I would prefer schools in US but open to any other locations including India. Funding would be a critical factor in shortlisting schools - Would prefer doing the course with funding/scholarship assistance.

TIA.

From which Indian undergraduate institution did you graduate?

You have good experience. Tell us a little more about the company you started in terms of number of employees, clients, revenue, accomplishments or some other metric of success.

From Anna University, Chennai.

For the first 1 year, I managed the start-up on my own. Did my best to get clients from US, UK and Australia (Mostly SMBs and contractors). Opened an office in Chennai and hired 3 employees to grow the business while I managed the business development part of it. Collective revenue over a period of 2 years would be about $0.2 million.

Hi harizd,

You've got a great profile and great GMAT! You are definitely well suited for an MBA at various schools. Sounds like you are in the very early stages of deciding to pursue an MBA. A lot of research needs to be done! It's hard to suggest schools for you as it's also important to understand what you want out of an MBA and what your post-mba career plans might be.

Take a step back as you need to look at each school and find out which one would be the best fit for you (i.e. not just because of its ranking). So what are they strong in? Entrepreneurship? Finance? General Management? Such as Kellogg is known for Marketing so is a good choice if you see your future career in Marketing. Also, are you interested in an international career? You might want to consider other international top schools such as LBS or INSEAD. Do you want a 1 year or 2 year program? Also cost is a concern for many and each school will provide scholarships so take a read through their sites to see what scholarships you might be eligible for.

It's hard to know which school can be the right fit but start talking to alumni or current students, join the schools blogs and twitter feeds, sign up for their news updates, start visiting campuses (if possible) or attend information sessions in the city you reside. Lots of schools come to you! Check out their websites to see their 'touring' schedule.

So I would start with this by doing research, research, research to get a sense which school is the best fit for you and aligns with your post-MBA employment plans.

If you want to talk, I'm all ears. At Fortuna, we know all the top schools very well and we can walk you through this decision-making process if you wish.

Good luck!

Thanks for your post - very encouraging.
I am taking GMAT later this year and targeting 700.

That aside, I've been doing a bit of research on schools and specialization. Based on my experience and interest, I'm considering an MBA in Supply Chain Management. I do have a list of schools specialized in MBA (SCM) within the US (based on my research).

University of Michigan - Ross
MIT - Sloan
MSU - Broad
Carnegie Mellon - Tepper
OSU - Fisher

As I narrow down my research further, I am likely to target few of the schools mentioned above. It would be helpful to get further opinion on the list of schools mentioned above. I do know some alumni / current students at Broad & Ross and have had some initial discussions with them about the career placement and ROI.

Hi Hariz,

With increasingly complex global operations, manufacturers, e-retailers and tech firms, they are among those who are driving demand for people with supply-chain expertise, so your post-MBA career goals look very solid.

The shortlist of schools is consistent with those goals, though you might want to also take a look at UNC Kenan Flagler which has a joint program in partnership with China's Tsinghua University, and USC Marshall and Arizona State which both offer an MSc.

In the case of MIT Sloan you can either gear your second year electives towards SCM, or take on the LGO dual degree program with the school of engineering. This is likely to be the most selective program on your shortlist, and you will certainly need a highly competitive GMAT score to match the profession experience and interest you already have in this field.

Your initial outreach to alum at Michigan Ross and MSU Broad is a great initiative, and I would encourage the same at Sloan, CMU, and Ohio State. While Ross and CMU are firmly entrenched among the top 15 US b-schools, with the career opportunities that implies, we always recommend taking your research to the next level and finding out about career placement in the industry you are targeting.

In this case, all 5 schools will have an interesting story to tell, and the alum are a great resource for better understanding the personality of the institution and their respective approach to career development in SCM. Establishing which schools best fit with your goals will then make it a lot easier to refine your shortlist.

Best,
