HEC Paris MS Finance

by gtamfreak » Sat Apr 14, 2012 3:05 am
Hi guys,

I need a profile valuation for HEC Paris Masters in Finance. Here goes my profile:

Undergrad: BE Computer Science in India (74%)
Postgrad: MBA Finance from UK (65%, 2:1 First class)
CFA Level 2 candidate
Good extra curricular (College basketball captain)
GRE: 157 Quants, 155 Verbal
IELTS: 8.5
7 months experience in Supply Chain and Finance in a US Based MNC

Pros:CFA Level I cleared, Some multi-culture exposure as a result of UK degree, Good recommendations, School first in 10th and 12th grade, Topper in MBA Class although from not a great school (Uni of Wales), fairly decent essays.

Cons: Low academic marks, Low GRE quant score and lack of solid "core" finance work experience.

I have already applied for HEC and considering applying for MS Finance in LSE, IE Business School, and ESCP Europe. Please comment on my chances of getting into these schools.

Hello gtamfreak, thanks for your question.

I have to admit that I specialize in MBA questions as opposed to MS in Finance ones - but that said, here's my opinion:

I think the first question any admissions committee would ask you is why exactly would you need a Masters in Finance when you already have an MBA in Finance. What would such a program give you that your MBA does not? In my mind, you would have to clearly demonstrate a specific need to be considered a strong candidate. Does this make sense?

Best of luck,
Brian

hi,

just back from my gmat
scored 730 -96 %ile( Q 49 V 40)

I'am primarily interested in pursuing MS finance degree but may go for an mba majoring in finance as i realize that maybe my age is too high and quant score too low for a good msf course

Background:
Age 28 yrs
Married Indian Male
Currently employed (3 Years) with an organisation committed to upliftment of rural poor in India and mandated to do so by the Government of India ( www.nabard.org) as an assistant manager. My job involves receiving ,scrutinizing and, if found alright, ensuring the sanction of proposals for the receipt of subsidy from the government of India. the job involves scrutinizing proposals for their techno financial and socio economic parameters as well as on site inspection of the infrastructure created to assess end user viability.

passed senior secondary exam in 2002 with 87 %
graduated from delhi university in 2005 with 64 % (bachelor of commerce with honours)
completed post graduation from a regional university (full time) in 2007 -masters in commerce-49.5%

was employed part time (working as a subscriptions assistant/manager) with a charitable institution from 2007-2009 while i also prepared for various indian competitive exams.

extra curriculars:
school captain
won awards for playing basketball, participating in quizzes, and throwing shotput at school level .

job related achievement: ensured the top position of my state (Madhya Pradesh) in the successful and zero default subsidy distribution for development of agriculture marketing infrastructure development in rural areas of the state.
i want to build a niche in the field of finance/developmental finance , acquire additional work ex of 2 years or so and then go for a "grand" mba...alternatively if i dont get into an a class ms program..i'll settle for an above avg mba

Sorry I missed this the first time you posted -- glad you posted separately. Things can get lost when they are tacked on to other posts.

Cheers,

It's pretty difficult to get scholarships for business school. Unfortunately I'm not as familiar with the MS finance offerings, but my guess is that they are more geared for individuals who want to work in a purely financial analyst role -- you'll probably get a lot more financial expertise since you'll focus only on finance for two years, vs. an MBA where you'll be able to take a few finance electives but mostly you'll get a general management education. So, I suppose it depends whether you wish to be a specialist vs more of a generalist -- the latter would probably enable you to be better positioned for future management roles. Again, I don't know too much about the MS Finance programs, so you'll have to verify what I'm suggesting through your research.
