Archaeologists in Egypt have excavated a 5,000-year-old wooden hull that is the earliest surviving example of a "built" boat--in other words, a boat constructed out of planks fitted together--and that thus represents a major advance, in terms of boat-building technology, over the dugout logs and reed vessels of more ancient vintage.

(A) together--and that thus represents
(B) together--and this has represented
(C) together, and it represents
(D) together that was representing
(E) together to represent

Can someone explain the long dash here and the second "that" in A. IS "that thus represents..." parallel with the first "that", implying that the hull itself represents....?

Uses of DASH (--)

One: use a single dash to indicate a change in direction or thought.

ex:- I'm planning to take the 10:30 -- no wait, the 9:30 train.

Two: use two dashes, one before and one after to set off a phrase. This use is similar to using either parentheses or comma's.

So above sentence u have two dashes so can rewrite that in this way:

I marked the comma's (used for dashes) in red...so u can clearly see in above, the second THAT is parallel to first one and logically refer to WOODEN HULL, hence i think Op A is the correct answer.
