"Federalist papers" > MR SC guide example

The Federalist papers is a compilation of articles written by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, as well as a few by John Jay, since each of them were advocates of the Constitution.

(A) since each of them were
(B) since they were each
(C) since all of them were
(D) each of which was
(E) because all of the men were


Unfortunately, I dont have the OA for this question. The question is from Manhattan Review SC guide 2007 .

I am confused between (C) and (E) , please help!

I would say E for two reasons:

Advocates clearly refers to the 3 men, therefore "men" must be specified, otherwise there is a possible confusion with the "papers"

BECAUSE is a better conjunction than SINCE

How to decide between C and E here?

It might sound vague.. but the statement doesnt mention all 3 writers as men. In that case how can we choose E?

Them is ambiguous because it could reference the articles as well as the people who wrote them.
