for instance, here are two sentences:

the bike path diverges from the highway, heading into downtown.
--> here, comma + "heading" describes the entire preceding clause. therefore, according to this sentence, the bike path diverges toward downtown. (we don't know where the highway goes, but it doesn't go toward downtown.)


the bike path diverges from the highway heading into downtown.
--> here, no comma + "heading" describes the preceding noun, "highway". therefore, according to this sentence, the highway heads into downtown. the bike path diverges from the highway and heads toward some other, unidentified location.
