Rail system

Because the population is denser there and the automobile is therefore inefficient as a means of transportation, a commuter rail system serving a given population is usually five times more efficient in a European city than it is in an American city.

serving a given population is usually five times more efficient in a European city than it is in an American city

serving a given population will usually be five times more efficient if it is placed in a European city instead of an American city

will usually be five times more efficient in a European city than one serving a comparable population in an American city

in a European city will usually be five times more efficient than will a system serving a comparable population in an American city

that is implemented in a European city will usually be five times more efficient than if it is implemented with a comparable population in an American city

IMO A.

I think A is the best answer because it is showing the proper diffrence between X and Y.

Vemuri,

Why do you say
[D]
? If you look closely, all answers except
[A]
speak in"future tense" "will". The present sentence has been presented in "present tense", so the OA ought to be in "present tense".

IMO
[A]
. What is OA?

OA is D. The reason A and B are not the answer because 'there' in the non-underlined part of the sentence can refer to European cities only (logically obvious) and in this choice this is the ambiguity.

I would go with D

Most parallel choice
Logical comparison between systems before and after the "than"

a commuter rail system than will a system

I am not able to understand why C is not the Ans. Can anyone please explain in detail the error in C?

Thanks in advance

IMO it is D.

NKB, the correct expression is 'X more efficient than Y' where X and Y are parallel. But in C we are not comparing parallel elements 'five times more efficient in a European city than one' is wrong in 'C'.

commuter rail system more efficient in a European city than in an American city makes more sense. But in C this is not so, we have lot of extra stuff that comes after than and before in an American city.
