OG 13 SC 123 about "after"

by lydiaxuxin » Sun Jun 08, 2014 1:03 am
123. Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, but they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease.

the answer is the original sentence as above, but I feel that there should be some verb after the "report" since the main sentence is " sales of wines declined, but they began to grow after the report"
isn't it better to say " after the report was published"? or it seems that the sentence is not finished

But when I check the usage of "after" in Longman, it says " after is usually used as a preposition (followed by a noun) : I'll do it after lunch. | Please call after 9.30. " I am confused about such a simple word, "after lunch" is familiar to me but "after report" looks awkward

is there anyone who can help me? thx!

Hi lydiaxuxin,

It seems that your issue is between English grammar/logic and GMAT grammar/logic. On Test Day, you'll likely come across a couple of SCs that you consider problematic. You'll know which answer is correct, but you won't "like" the way the answer is written (and you'll probably "want" there to be some additional words added). Thankfully, the GMAT gives you 5 answers to choose from and GMAT SCs tend to focus on major grammar rules with a few rarer idiom and style rules thrown in to test your thoroughness. This means that you just have to eliminate the answers that make the most obvious errors (in that SC prompt) - there will be only one answer that remains - the correct one.

With the prompt that you posted, my guess is that you didn't find any of the other answer choices to be "better", so you eliminated them and were left with answer A. If you're looking for "meaning" in the sentence, then the "intent" is that after the 1991 report (was published), sales of wines increased. The words "was published" aren't really necessary because they're implied. There was a report, people read it, then they went back to drinking wine in greater volume.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Thanks a lot for your reply!
but i'm still confused about the option C in this question:

Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, but with a reduced risk of heart disease linked in a 1991 report with moderate alcohol consumption, in particular red wine, they began growing again.

is there any problem with this sentence?
thank you!
