Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Goldman Sachs Inc. financed Crystal Technologies, a tech company, as a venture capital investment and they would withdrew all their funding only after a long and comprehensive analysis of the bankrupt tech company's account books.

A) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Goldman Sachs Inc. financed Crystal Technologies, a tech company, as a venture capital investment and they would withdraw all its funding
B) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Goldman Sachs Inc. had financed Crystal Technologies, a tech company, as a venture capital investment and withdrew all its funding
C) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Crystal Technologies, a tech company, had been financed by Goldman Sachs Inc. as a venture capital investment and the investor withdrew all its funding
D) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Crystal Technologies, a tech company, was financed as a venture capital investment by Goldman Sachs Inc., which withdrew all its funding
E) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Crystal Technologies, a tech company, was a venture capital investment of Goldman Sachs Inc. , who withdrew all its funding

Think the problem with option C is not the use of had been, but the use of 'and'. The use conjunction 'and', which gives us a feeling that Goldman Sachs Inc and the Investor are different. In this case Goldman Sachs is the investor. So option C is out.

I think the answer is E.

I think, 'had been' is not the issue. C is wrong because it has run-on sentence.

A) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Goldman Sachs Inc. financed Crystal Technologies, a tech company, as a venture capital investment and they would withdraw all its funding
--> Here 'its' refers to 'Goldman Sachs Inc' so changes the meaning of the sentence. 'and they would withdrew all their funding' creates run-on sentence.

B) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Goldman Sachs Inc. had financed Crystal Technologies, a tech company, as a venture capital investment and withdrew all its funding
--> Same error as A

C) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Crystal Technologies, a tech company, had been financed by Goldman Sachs Inc. as a venture capital investment and the investor withdrew all its funding
--> 'and the investor withdrew all its funding XXX' creates run-on sentece

D) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Crystal Technologies, a tech company, was financed as a venture capital investment by Goldman Sachs Inc., which withdrew all its funding
--> Here 'Before its bankruptcy in 2008' modifies Crystal technologies as this company became bankrupt. CORRECT

E) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Crystal Technologies, a tech company, was a venture capital investment of Goldman Sachs Inc. , who withdrew all its funding
--> Here 'who' refers to 'Goldman Sachs Inc.', which is a thing and WHO can modify only people so usage of who is incorrect.

D why use of had been in option c wrong

Yeah actually overlooked the reference of 'who'. Yes who is used only to modify people. So D must be the correct answer

yeah, we often do such kind of mistake. Every word matters in SC. :(

For your reference :
In MGMAT SC 5th Ed. guide, on page no. 109, it is mentioned that :
The words before and after indicate the sequence of events clearly and emphatically enough to make the use of the Past Perfect unnecessary.
