Got Below 400, this is my story

by GmatLegend » Tue Dec 06, 2011 9:46 pm
Hey guys,

First time poster here. My friend directed me to this site so I wanted to post up my little story and looking for some help at the same time.

Long story short, Im 27, been working in business for 4 years, graduated with a an average GPA (3.0) from one of the lower end UC's. Nothing too spectacular, but I do want to go to Business school.

So first of all, I got below 400 which I think isnt an accurate reading because I had like 30 minutes left on my Quant.

My plan is to get above 550. Thats all. ALL i want is 550.

My first question to you guys is, What GMAT courses do you recommend I take? My parents suggest I go to a classroom course (A little on the expensive side) but they are right.

My plan of action is start with the GMAT course in January and take the GMAT in March-April, apply to schools in May-June for Fall 2012 Enrollment. I understand Manhattan GMAT might be for those who are trying to score from 620 to 780. I would like a GMAT course to cater to my range 550. I know that sounds silly but a course like Manhattan Gmat might be too over my head I guess.

My second question is, here are some of the schools I am applying for:

1. Rutgers University Part time MBA program
2. Pepperdine University Part time MBA program
3. Boston COllege Part time MBA program
4. Santa Clara University part time MBA program
5. Cal State Fullerton MBA program
6. San Jose State University MBA program

Does anyone have any experiences with the following schools with a GMAT scores of 550? I know the schools website says those are sufficient but just wanted to know from real life experience.

Thanks so much.

A private tutor may be the best option IMO. As most prep companies are targeting 600-700 people where the maajority lies.

I can really only answer your first question. This should be very doable. I would go the self-study route. You should look into buying high quality books for all the subjects like the Manhattan GMAT Math series, Powerscore CR Bible, Manhattan GMAT SC Guide. If you get the right study books, you just then need to go through them enough and do enough high quality practice problems. If you go through every Official Guide practice problem and understand the concepts behind the problems, there's no reason you couldn't get a 550+. Do your research, buy the right books, and then study hard and consistently.
