golden rules of translations

by resilient » Sat May 17, 2008 7:22 pm
A jar that contains only nickels and dimes has three more nickels than dimes in it. The total value of all the coins is $2.40. How many nickels are in the jar?

15
18
20
24
48

qa is 20

the question is fairly straight forward but the translation is getting me.

I have 5n+10d=240 and

n+3=d WRONG the correct answer is d+3=n but why? I am gettins snagged on this part often. need to understand the logic so please dont solve the question because its not my weakness. Im looking to learn translations better.

mgmat translation book is fine and the og doesnt give me much trouble anymore. However, these translations sometimes give me problems.
Appetite for 700 and I scraped my plate!

Hi risilient,

Just read the question carefully

It say there are 3 more nickels than dimes. That means d=n+3 where d=dimes and n=nickels.

Hope it helps.

I have a problem with the OA. My calculations show that n = 18 or "B".

Also, regarding Resilient's question:

Think about what is logically sound in these types of scenarios. The question says, "3 more nickels than dimes", which tells you that nickels > dimes.

An equation that reads: n = d + 3 satisfies this need.

Finally, that means I do not agree with ksh. I think you meant to express the opposite eqn (i.e. n = d + 3) and not d = n + 3.
