The single-family house constructed by the Yana, a Native American people who lived in what is now northern California, was conical in shape, its framework of poles overlaid with slabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and banked with dirt to a height of three to four feet.

A. banked with dirt to a height of
B. banked with dirt as high as that of
C. banked them with dirt to a height of
D. was banked with dirt as high as
E. was banked with dirt as high as that of
In B, that lacks a clear antecedent.
Eliminate B.

A conjunction such as and must serve to connect PARALLEL FORMS.
Non-underlined portion:
its framework of poles overlaid with slabs of bark
Here, overlaid serves as a ADJECTIVE describing its framework of poles.
What KIND of framework?
A framework OVERLAID WITH SLABS OF BARK.

C: its framework of poles overlaid with slabs...and banked them
Here, banked serves as a VERB.
What ACTION was performed by its framework?
Its framework BANKED them.
A conjunction such as and cannot serve to connect an adjective (overlaid) to a verb (banked).
Eliminate C.

D and E: its framework of poles overlaid with slabs...and was banked
Here, and incorrectly serves to connect overlaid (adjective) to was banked (verb).
Eliminate D and E.

The correct answer is A.

A: its framework of poles overlaid with slabs...and banked with dirt
Here, banked serves not as a verb but as an ADJECTIVE describing its framework of poles.
What KIND of framework?
A framework BANKED WITH DIRT.
The result is that and serves -- correctly -- to connect two MODIFIERS (overlaid and banked).

Do you have a specific question type in mind, or are you saying that you're having problems with all counting and probability questions?

Cheers,
Brent
