In no other live concert did Luciano Pavarotti generate such critical acclaim as did his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972.

A: did his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972
B: had his 1972 Metropolitan Opera performance
C: in his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972 *
D: his 1972 Metropolitan Opera performance did
E: his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972

Why are two verbs "did and generate"?

This is a comparison issue. You have to compare Pavarotti at one performance to Pavarotti at another performance. You can't compare Pavarotti to a performance.

E: his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972

Why is two verbs "did and generate"?
Option B is incorrect as it's uses wrong tense.
C and E lacks the verb which is needed to maintain parallelism.
In Case of D and A, D is more concise than A, hence, I chose D.
OA Please?

Hi Tani,

I've a doubt: isn't it that the comparision is between his two performances?
Please help in understanding this one

Thanks!

In no other live concert did Luciano Pavarotti generate such critical acclaim as did his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972.

Meaning of the sentence:
Luciano Pavarotti generated more critical acclaim in the concert at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972 than in any other live concert.

Analysis of Original Sentence: This sentence has two clauses as shown.
1: In no other live concert did Luciano Pavarotti generate such critical acclaim
2: as did his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972.

Note that we can rewrite clause 1 in the form as shown:such that the prepositional phrase appears after the the subject and the verb.
1(rewrite): Luciano Pavarotti did generate such critical acclaim in no other live concert
Note that the verb "did generate" can be changed into "generated". So the simplified sentence will be:

Luciano Pavarotti generated such critical acclaim in no other live concert as in his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972.

Now its perfectly clear that the comparison is made between "in other live concert" and "in his performance at...."

Clearly, Choice A is worded such that the comparison is made between:
Laciano Pavarotti generated acclaim {in no other live concert...) as
his performance did (at the Metropolitan...)
Thus, comparing Laciano Pavarotti's action with his performance's action is no logically parallel. Thus, choice A has comparison error.

Answer Choice Analysis.
Choice B: "had" is incorrect helping verb. This choice implies as if Opera performance possessed something.
Choice C: Correct as explained above.
Choice D & E: Same comparison as Choice A and hence incorrect.
