GMAT Quant How to take from 37 to 45

by sukhman » Thu Oct 10, 2013 9:38 pm
I am around 37 Quant mark , in 2007 I got 35 in Quant ( Test was considered easier then & I got 500 without much preparation ) This time I am aiming higher close to 650 and have been preparing systematically on and off since 2013 for Quant I was around 31 mark . Since 6 months I Have been putting stress on quant , doing basics for Quant revising them 2-3 times using a Indian book CAT by Arun Sharma , not touching MGMAT or OG at all , 1000 series was considered too easy , I did them last time and was able to solve them since had been out of college only 2-3 years before . I have bought GMAT Prep Pack 1 and GMAT Exam Pack 1 , So far about a month ago I was around 540 - 27 Verbal 37 Quant ( I didnt get too many hard questions in Quant so have not reached my potential yet). Since then I have started revising wrong questions , Revised the GMAT prep results and saw how many wrong answers i had them around 7-8 per section I plan to bring them around 3-4 in whole test and take my score to around 45 .Doing questions now from 700-800 quant material available on net , material seems to be MGMAT material because I had given MGMAT test 2 years before Should I continue doing it as extra practice , dont want to do OG as it is considered easy material. I am not sure whether to do GMAT Prep Pack 1 now to increase my score to 45 level.

Dear sukhman,
I'm happy to respond. :-)

First of all, here's a balanced three-month study plan for improving your math:
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/3-month-gm ... h-focused/

Here are a few articles you may find helpful in thinking about your understanding of GMAT math:
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2013/how-to-stu ... gmat-math/
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2013/mathematic ... -the-gmat/
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2013/how-to-do- ... th-faster/
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2013/multiple-s ... gmat-math/

Math is all about the details. Understand that it's very hard to answer a general vague question (how do I go from this score to that score?), because the nature of the problems you are having with math determine how hard the improvement is going to be. Typically, as a teacher, I don't know the the trouble a student is really having until I see the details of how that student approaches & solves problems. I strongly encourage you to post individual problems you get wrong --- say, when I read this problem, I did this & this, and that lead me to this answer. What do I have to know so I don't make this mistake again? Do that for a number of problems. Feel free to sent me a private message, to solicit my input. This site is teeming with experts who are able to help you. Ask a number of questions, as detailed as possible, so that the experts can give you the detailed help you need. Again, math is all about the precise details --- you won't make substantial improvements in math until you make improvements in the details.

Does all this make sense?
Mike :-)

Hi sukhman,

A Q37 typically means that you have good "math" skills, but you're making silly mistakes on a number of questions and you're likely getting too many DS questions wrong. To raise your Quant score to a Q45, you're going to have to "fix" these problems, which will likely involve adjusting your approach (and how you "see" Quant questions) and learning some new tactics.

There are some details in your post that I'm hoping that you can clarify:

1) You've described using certain prep materials and not using others. It's possible that the material that you've used and the lessons that you've been taught are part of the reason WHY you're stuck at Q37. The most realistic source for practice GMAT questions can be found in the OG and in the material that you can download (mostly for free) from mba.com. You've stated that you haven't used this material because "it is considered easy material." WHO considers it too easy? Was it the person who sold you that other book?

2) When was the last time you took a practice CAT? You mention scoring 540/Q37/V27 about a month ago, but was that the last CAT that you took? Also, how many have you taken and what were the scores on each?

3) When approaching Quant questions, do you find yourself doing lots of work "in your head"? If so, then that's a big part of your problem, and why you're making as many silly mistakes as you are.

Hi Sukhman

CAT by Arun Sharma may be your problem. I have studied it and its a wonderful book for CAT. But this book is too out of scope for GMAT. It is more a preparatory book in Mathematical Skills while GMAT tests your reasoning skills with maths and verbal tools. But if you have studied Sharma's book you definitely have the maths in your bag. I suggest study some good GMAT prep material that can tell you how to use mathematics for reasoning and not just problem solving.

Well I studied from Arun Sharma Cat and Time MBA 2010-2011 notes ( which I bought from somewhere) to clear my basics using solved examples, I had Quantum Cat by Verma in my mind but decided against it. I studied MGMAT books but I found they do not cover all the topics though I am referring them for some areas now, For instance LCM boxes and rest go above my head when I know an easier way to calculate LCM. I was just trying to build my foundations since it has been 8 years since I left Engg College though I did a Business Diploma abroad afterwards. Now I am trying to solve GMAT questions from various resources , I had access to Jeff Sackman Sets in 2011 but they seemed easy and just copy of official questions as in OG , I am still trying to get the challenge questions , I am not sure if I should but GMAT club tests since I still have to do GMAT prep questions . Experts please advice me on this .
