correct answer is D but how can HIS refers to Beethoven ACCORDING TO RULE POSSESSIVE PRONOUN CAN REFER TO POSSESSIVE NOUN

Yup the answer should be D i.e "Despite his traditional status as the first great Romantic composer, Beethoven is considered the last great composer of the Classical era by some musicologists. "

A & C u can reject because of wrong idiom consider to be & consider as
B is wrong because it talks "Bethoven's" and his should point to "Noun"
D is the right answer

How is E wrong? In this case, is HE refering to Beethoven?

Although HE is traditionally considered to be the first great Romantic composer, some musicologists consider Beethoven as the last great composer of the Classical era.

Errors -

1. All options where he refers to Beethoven's should be ruled out. He should refer to Beethoven. -> rule out A and B

2. Incorrect usage of idiom - consider X Y. A incorrectly uses the idiom as X is considered to be Y. Choice C also incorrectly uses the idiom as - X is considered as being Y. Choice E incorrectly uses the idiom consider X as Y. Only D correctly uses the idiom in the form - X is considered Y.

3. The use of although vs Despite. When someone did something in the face of an opposition, despite is used. For example - Despite his sickness, John performed well in exams. His traditional status was not a problem faced by Beethoven and hence the usage of despite is not suitable. I would prefer the use of although to despite.

Given the choices, I would go with D, because there are issues with A,B,C and E.

Please post with proper format. Its hard to tell which choice is which - A, B, C etc.

Man !!! this is hard to read ...
however, few points I want to mention,

Only possessive pronoun can refer back to possessive noun.
But, possessive pronoun can refer to non-possessive noun as well.

A, B out.

Now correct idiom is, consider X Y
and not, consider as ...
or consider to be ...

C, E out.

Hey ty. I still need to study the Idioms chapter from the MGmat book :P I think this is the hardest subject tested for non-native english speakers.

I understand the correct idiom should be : Consider X Y

If that's the case, can someone explain to me why D is correct in using : Beethoven is considered as being the last great composer.
