IMO A.
The original sentence tells 2 things about the framework of poles 1) overlaid with slabs of bark and 2) banked with dirt
The use of "was" in option D and E is unnecessary and makes it awkward.
In Option C, has problem with pronoun reference
In option B, "as high as that of" creates an impression of comparison. But we are not comparing anything in the original sentence.
Hence option A looks correct to me.
What is the OA?

I believe the answer should be A because, the words 'banked with dirt' refers to 'frame work of poles '.
If we use 'was' here, then the words 'Was banked with dirt' would refer to single family house which is incorrect.
If we use 'was' here, then the words 'Was banked with dirt' would refer to single family house which is incorrect.
