IMO D
A. have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic (Incorrect comparison)
B. have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
C. would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
D. would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic (CORRECT)
E. would have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economical

Hi ,

The original sentences says the " demographers have to know ... " but option D says "demographers wold have to know... " isnt that changing the meaning of the original sentence ??

What the demographers have to know is compared with now. No sense. Hence A out.

I guess you are down to A & D because others use economical which is not the intended word here

A uses wrong comparison

I am not sure how the OA is E

Social and economical??

You are rite chidcguy, I chose D on the test.

Well E has a unique feature when compared to resta options,

E says "more than now"

while all others say "more than they do now "

And Im confused bout the rite usage.

Well, there is no way that D cannot be the answer.

Clearly, as mentioned in the previous posts,
"economical" distorts the meaning and cannot be the answer
A- cannot be the answer because of the incorrect comparison between
[u]great deal[/u] more than [u]now[/u]

However, I am still not completely comfortable with the tense side of SC questions. Further to the question posted by Vignesh, Can someone please help explain the difference in "demographers have to know" and "demographers have to know"

From chidcguy's explanation, I understand the problem with the comparison, but am worried about the tense.

What's wrong with E

Why cannot we say "KNOW A GREAT DEAL MORE THAN NOW " in lieu of "know a great deal more than they do now"

I have read on BTG / MGMAT forum..dont recall where that when the message is conveyed in the former of the sentence
one need not mention again.. so why here in D we mention ??

Also, if I have a sentence
Tom has always eaten more food than Jerry <has>
Tom has always eaten more food than Jerry < < > >
Tom has always eaten more food than jerry <does>

When does one use DOES/DO/DID in latter part of the sentence, given that we have HAVE/HAS/ in former part of the sentence

What do we use here ???
