I would go for D. I think we are comparing how does the work read?? Does makes sense for me in the end.. Any thoughts on my interpretation??

IMO D is correct because it compares how the novel does not read as an apprentice work reads(does).
In A the comparison seems to be wrong. Could anyone elaborate on why A is correct?

The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

I feel that D is wrong because it says "... like an apprentice work does". Like does not include verbs. Like supports only phrases. So A is a better choice.
