GMAT newbie...need advice

by shahindia » Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:58 am
Hey there! I've just applied for a gmat appointment. I am taking this test as a part of the admission procedure in loyola university chicago. Their average score requirement is 550. I've taken tests online without preparing for anything and with my basic knowledge i've been able to score 400 at the most. Now i need to achieve the target of 550 and i am using kaplan math workbook and the 800 qns official gmat guide book. I am pretty scared about this and i need advice on how i should plan everything. I need a strategy on time allotments, areas to concentrate on and other factors that could help me. My gmat appointment is on november 26 2008. Please help me

Ok, so you know my advice is not based on success as I'm just starting my studies and in the same boat as yourself. Looking to start a masters program in January at a school with average gmat of 550 as well.

My first practice exam from mba.com I scored low such as yourself, but I did zero prep for it. I now have started out reviewing the basics, using a math workbook by cliffs. I also got the manhattan CR and the SC workbooks. I will go over the basics and than begin OG 11. Hoping after freshing up on the basics, than hitting OG will be enough for my target score of 550.

In a few weeks I will take another prep CAT exam to see how I improved before starting OG11 and another half way through OG11 and at the end.

My time is limited as I work long hours and have a lot going on after work as well....If I do not see improvements with this plan I will reorganize my priorities and set more time towards studying.

I will keep you updated, please do the same.

I'm also starting to prepare for the gmat.

From my researching, I'm going to start with the OG11 and MGMAT SC books first. I'll take my first practice tomorrow without any prep and see how that goes.

Well good luck to you guys...and do let me know of how the mock tests end up...and please do provide me the websites and the tests you've taken so that i can try em too....anyways i have noted that youe guys commonly use OG and its been told that OG has lots of difficult questions that a basic starter cannot cash up on....anyways basics is the only way to climb up high as you suggested...anyways thanks for the advice and do keep me posted of your improvements and strategies...good luck

GMAT Score:570

I would suggest working through all of the Manhattan GMAT guides. There are 8 in all. I would also take advantage of their website and take as many practice tests as you can after you get the basics down. I scored a 570 back in June and after looking through the MGMAT guides I havent scored under a 600 on four different practice tests. The way Manhattan teaches the concepts is much better than the OG tutorials.
