so , the way it works is -
we know a person having scheduling conflict cannot be assigned (from larson)
a person lacking assertiveness cannot be assigned (Franks)

conclusion - peter gets assigned

Personally , I did not like any of the assumptions because they were really not assumptions supporting the argument
I always ask myself for all assumption questions - " Does the argument depend on this being true"

A good assumption would have been that there are only 3 people in the department Or something like 'any person in the department not having a scheduling conflict and having assertiveness can only be assigned and Parker is the only such person"[/b]

In other words, we're required to differentiate between avoidable schedule conflicts and unavoidable schedule conflicts? Couldn't we say that an avoidable schedule conflict is as good as NO scheduling conflict, since it's avoidable?

We have defender assumption here...
A new element is introduced in the last statement of the passage. So, this element should be connected to the premises of the passage, which are at the start of the passage so that the gap can be filled.
I think any option that links to only one premise would be wrong.
Instead, B deals with the other part of the conclusion. A Supervisor.

So, I think B would be fine.

But after reading all the good points made in this thread and seeing the OA, I analyzed all the options again.

If we phrase B as:

Other than a supervisor in the shipping department, the task cannot be assigned to anyone who does not have unavoidable conflict or who does have assertiveness of the task.

Then only it makes good sense.

Now D,

As Kavin mentioned

D says that The task cannot be assigned to anyone who has any kind (unavoidable) scheduling conflict.
So, D makes sense here.

I choose B.

A is irrelevant
B is correct. it makes the argument valid.
C is invalid.
D is too broad.
E is weaker assumption than B

Premise 1: Larson cannot do the assignment is that she has an unavoidable scheduling conflict.
Premis 2: Franks cannot do the assignment is that he does not quite have the assertiveness the task
requires
Premise 3: Parker is the only supervisor in the shipping department other than Larson and Franks.
Answer B: The task cannot be assigned to anyone other than a supervisor in the shipping department.
Conclusion: the task must be assigned to Parker

B looks good to me.

I need some advice on why C is not close? I did not see anyone mentioning about C much.

Only reason I see why C is not close is because it doesnt affect the conclusion.

Am I missing something?

this argument is weird... a really weird... and tough
i cant think and explain and understand why D is the answer, for me, B should be the answer. so weird if the OA is D
suppose that there are 3 people on the ship and one has unavoidable schedule conflict and other has no assertiveness the task requires and the left one might be chosen
thus the condition to be chosen is (s)he has avoidable schedule and the assertiveness the task require, correct?
agree that D says the task cant be given to anyone who has scheduling conflict but what about assertiveness? what if (s)he has no assertive? she still not has enough condition to get the task, right?
thats why i chose B. how come its D the answer?
we should ask for more explaination from the experts....hmhmhm weird!

just additional information about Parker . The stimulus doesnt say that Parker is being the task because he is the only supervisor left after Larson and Franks.
