GMAT Burn Out--Help!!!

by 800GMAT » Wed May 23, 2007 5:12 pm
Hi to all,

Suddenly I am feeling extremely bored to study for the GMAT.

The thought of studying RC overwhelms me and I keep postponing it....
CR- brain has kinnda stopped analyzing for the CR
SC is OK

Quant is also very slow....

I think I am losing interest but I dont want to .....Has anyone of you felt this way...

Guys, pls suggest how should I approach the prep so that I am neither bored nor inefficient....test is in June..So I cannot afford to feel this way now...
Pls help!! :(

I felt the same way as you did at one point during my prep.

You need to take a vacation. Think about taking the upcoming weekend off--don't think about your studies at all and do something fun. You need this time out because at this point it seems like you will burn out soon if you keep studying.

Best of luck!

I couldn't agree with Eric more - take few days' break. A real break - no studying and no feeling guilty about not studying. It will make you feel renewed with energy, I promise.
I am sure a gap will also help you be more receptive to solutions - your brain needs to rest.
Good luck and well done on all the hard work!

Hi Vanessa,
Do you feel comfortable with taking the GMAT in June?

I asked you that because that tells me that you must really be feeling like you are under the gun..pressured into doing some things that you really don't want to do. Things do become overwhelming when you are feeling that way, too. Honestly, I think that it takes at least two to three months to get adequately prepared to take the GMAT. Not to sound alarming, if someone has not had math in a long time or if they have problems with things about the test, then I would take more time to get prepared to take the GMAT. Preparation for the GMAT should have a well thought out, study plan that will cover all the things that you need to know for the test

Yes, take a diagnostic test to see where both your strengths and weaknesses are. Then, you will be able to see what you need to do in order to fix those problem areas. Capitalize on making your weak points into strong points.

If you can, try to make up a study plan based on the results of your diagnostic test. You should not study for more than 20 to 25 hours a week, period. If you spend all of your free time studying every day, you will get burned out.

Give yourself, at least one whole day off every week that you are studying for the test. Also, make a plan to do something interesting on that day off. I am sure that you will be able to find something fun that fits.

Hey Greg,
Thanks for the responses and helpfulness - please know that I appreciate it.
I'm actually not taking the GMAT in June, but on 10 August.
The majority of my summer will be spent intensively studying and i will not be working during that time. I have 32 full days to study, and a further two weeks in which I can study 3 hours a day.
Do you think this will be enough? I hope so, but if not I will defer the test to a later date.
Essentially, I decided to book in a test date so that I have a goal to strive towards.
Please be honest if you think it sounds too unrealistic. By my estimations I should have over 200 hours.
Thank you again,
Vanessa

Forums actually helped me too during my prep. It's nice to vent and receive support from a community of people struggling over the same stuff.

Hope you're enjoying your vacation!

If you find you just can't get motivated on your own, try to set up a study group; otherwise, you may have to shell out for a class to force yourself to do it!

This happened to me too recently.....I took last week off...didn't look at a single thing and now I'm ready to get back to it. I'm going to have to redo my study schedule but oh well!! :) I needed some "mental" days!!

Getting back to studying

by GCHall840 » Wed May 30, 2007 5:56 am
Well, it seems as if quite a few people on here got kind of tired out from studying for the test. I can vouch for that kind of feeling, but I know that I want to get back to the focus that I had with my GMAT prep work. I really had a few problems with some particulars of the MBA program that I will be starting this next school year. But, those problems have been resolved. Now, I am restarting my prep work this Friday. It will be good to get back to the studying and the focus that I had before. If I could do that then, I can do it now.
