Did not Beat The GMAT

After a lengthy three months of preparation, i gave my GMAT today but was fairly disappointed to get the score. My scores reads, Q 48, V 24 590. And my target of 720 appears to be a distant dream.
At this time i am worried and ponder wandering in several directions as to where do i re-start again.

Clearly verbal is any area that needs significant improvement. However i had prepared my SC using manhattan and solved OG questions.

I am planning to give it again in a another two months time to give my self some chance for round 2 of applications.

I would appreciate any words of wisdom and guidance

Hi eccentric,

My advice is to take some time off to recharge your batteries for the next round of studying.

During that time, you might want to read posts in this forum, because you'll find a lot of stories about people who did not achieve their target score on the first attempt but, through perseverance, eventually got the score they wanted.

I think this will help build your confidence, and confidence is an important ingredient in beating the GMAT.

I agree with Brent. I took the Gmatprep for the 3rd time before my test. I knew that the score could be inflated but it was just the ego boost that I needed for my test

I agree with brent on this...you need to relax.....Now you should be happy that u know ur weekness, ur quant skills are pretty nic....just work on verbal...

@ motnhs should be enough for verbal....let me knw what all study material you used...

I am sure ull cross 720 this time...

I primarily relied on Manhattan sentence correction, OG 12. During my final leg of preparation i solved the OG sentence correction twice since i initially had problems getting down to correct choice...And i presume that my performance would be good in SC in actual exam the reason being that i could decipher almost all SC questions and was comfortable solving each one of them...I also feel that i could have taken a serious beating in CR & RC wherein i stayed puzzled and flummoxed over lot of questions...

Even my practice test scores indicate lot of inconsistency in verbal. While my overall score in over 7 practice test ranged from 550 - 690 (kaplan, manhattan and prep..) The verbal scaled score ranged from 22 - 36.

My actual score of 24 does indicate that i am not doing things which are fundamentally correct. Also my primary objective now is to focus on verbal and attain some level of consistency. I guess only then can i think of any thing above 700. I guess V38, Q48 should get me over 700 but i am slightly lost at this point as to what will help me get to at least V38...

Hi,
It could one of "those days ".Were you too worked up in the week preceding the GMAT. ? You could have exhausted yourself there. You seem to be doing ok.! I am pretty sure you have the basics covered. Verbal scaled score of 24 indicates a very low percentile and judging by your write up. You seem to have a decent command on the language.
Critical reasoning as you pointed out,some say, is more of "heuristics" but with practice and keen eye patterns you should be able to figure that out too. Powerscore CR is one of the books I would recommend.
Also,understand why each option is wrong and figure out how the test taker is trying to trick you into choosing the wrong answer. If you do this you will realize that you will save time and your accuracy will also improve. Even my first verbal scaled score was 22 on my first gmat prep. But I was able to improve it to 40 in my last Gmatprep.Follow MGMAT forums for GMATprep questions. Brilliant explanations there.
I would say it is just about connecting with the passages and the CR stimuli and yeah,step in the test takers "shoes" if you d like !
