Many entomologists say that campaigns to eradicate the fire ant in the United States have
failed because the chemicals that were used were effective only in wiping out the ant’s
natural enemies, which made it easier for them to spread.
A. which made it easier for them
B. which makes it easier for it
C. thus making it easier for them
D. thus making it easier for the ant
E. thereby, it was made easier for the ant

Choice D

A & C out for using them, when the subject is ant and singular.

B) has unnecessary it at the end.

Now with D & E choices...

E) Thereby is not concise usage compared to thus in D.

Choice D

D for me too

Eradicating the enemies and growing of ant's population is two effects of one cause..

thus making should be used.... and "thus making" makes it more clear...

Reopening the chain again...

I too went for D but I am bit confused about the pronoun "it" present in this option.

Could someone explain me what "it" refers to?

D. thus making it easier for the ant

Thanks very much in advance.

Option D is correct.

A, B and C are ruled out since the usage of them or it is ambiguous.

In Option D and E, D is the right usage.
