In Jackson School, 150 students study Spanish or Physics or Both. If 50 of these students do not study Spanish, how many of these students study both Spanish and Physics?

1) Of the 150 students, 30 do not study physics.
2) A total of 120 students study physics.

The OA is D.

I don't understand why D is the correct answer. Can any expert explain this DS question for me, please? Thanks.

A key thing to recognize here is that all students study at least one subject: studying neither Physics nor Spanish is NOT an option. Our only options here are *only* Physics, *only* Spanish, or *both* Physics and Spanish. This means that when the problem tells us that 50 students do not study Spanish, this means that these 50 students study *only* Physics, and the remaining 100 students must study *only* Spanish or *both*.

Statement 1

If 30 students do not study Physics, this means that these 30 students study *only* Spanish, and the remaining 120 students must study *only* Physics or *both*. If 50 students study *only* Physics and 30 students study *only* Spanish, then 70 students study *both*. Sufficient.

Statement 2

If 120 students study Physics in total, and 50 of them study *only* Physics, then 70 students study *both* Physics and Spanish. This leaves 30 students that study *only* Spanish. Sufficient.

If you have trouble keeping track of info on problems like these, I recommend filling out a double matrix with "Physics" and "No Physics" along one axis and "Spanish" and "No Spanish" along the other - for this question, you would just enter "0" for the intersection of "No Physics" and "No Spanish". Let me know if you'd like further explanation on the double matrix method!

This is an EITHER/OR group problem.
Every student EITHER studies Spanish OR does not.
Every student EITHER studies physics OR does not.
For an EITHER/OR group problem, use a DOUBLE-MATRIX to organize the data.
In a double-matrix, the entries in any given row or column must add up to the TOTAL of that row or column.

Let S = Spanish, NS = not Spanish, P = physics, NP = not physics.
Here is the matrix:
Image

150 students study Spanish, physics or both.
50 of these students do not study Spanish.

Because every student studies Spanish, physics or both, the center box -- which represents the number who study NEITHER subject -- must be given a value of 0.
The following matrix is yielded:
Image

Statement 1: Of the 150 students, 30 do not study physics.
The following matrix is yielded:

Inserting the remaining values, we get:
Image
Thus, the number who study both subjects = 70.
SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2: A total of 120 students study physics.
The following matrix is yielded:

Inserting the remaining values, we get:

SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is D.

I thought I'd point out that Mitch's Double Matrix approach can be used for most questions featuring a population in which each member has two characteristics associated with it.
Here, we have a population of students, and the two characteristics are:
- taking Spanish or not taking Spanish
- taking Physics or not taking Physics

This question type is VERY COMMON on the GMAT, so be sure to master the technique.
