A jewelry dealer initially offered a bracelet for sale at an asking price that would give a profit to the dealer of 40 percent of the original cost. What was the original cost of the bracelet?
(1) After reducing this asking price by 10 percent, the jewelry dealer sold the bracelet at a profit of $403.
(2) The jewelry dealer sold the bracelet for $1,953.

My answer was D while the OA is
A
. Not sure why? Please help

(2) isn't sufficient because the stem tell us that the bracelet was initially offered for sale at a price that would bring a 40% profit. Knowing the actual sale price doesn't tell us what the initial price was.

I'm still not very clear on the explanation. My answer was D as well.

How would express this through the algebraic formula Profit = Sale - Cost?

i think stuart is pointing to the language of the question.

i guess statement (2) is insufficient because the price mentioned could easily correspond to a % profit other than 40%.

this is a  little trap
