From Sunday to nest Saturday, Mary read (and finished?) a book with 392 pages. After the first day, she read 12 more pages than the previous day. How many pages did she read on Sunday?

I am not really sure if the question is properly framed, nonetheless I will try to answer it to the best of my knowledge.

Let the number of pages read by Mary on Sunday be X, then
The number of pages read by Mary on Monday = X + 12
The number of pages read by Mary on Tuesday = X + 2*12
The number of pages read by Mary on Wednesday = X + 3*12
The number of pages read by Mary on Thursday = X + 4*12
The number of pages read by Mary on Friday = X + 5*12
The number of pages read by Mary on Saturday = X + 6*12

Total number of pages read by Mary through the week = X + X + 12 + X + 2*12 + X + 3*12 + X + 4*12 + X + 5*12 + X + 6*12 = 392
That is 7X + 12(1+2+3+4+5+6) = 392
7X = 140
X = 20 = Number of pages read by Mary on Sunday!

Hi Sud21!

You can use properties of consecutive sets for a bit of a shortcut. Because Mary is reading a number of pages that increases each day by 12 books, the average of the total read will be the number of pages she read on the middle day (Wednesday). This means she read 392/7 = 56 pages on Wednesday. Count back 3 days at 12 books each (36 books), she read
56-36 = 20
books on Sunday.
