Fundraiser - Max min

For a school fundraiser, a class of nine students sold bags of popcorn for $1.00 each bag. If no two students sold the same number of bags, how many students did not record a sale?

(1) The class earned $45.00 in total from the sale of popcorn.

(2) The highest total recorded by any one student was $10.00.


1- not suff
2 - not suff

combined?? veritas says C. way i approached it, get E. what is the error

nine students
10+9+8+7+6 + 5+0+0+0 = 45 so 3 no sales
10+9+8+7+6 + 0+4+0+1= 45 so 2 no sales

Your examples (in blue) break the rule that says "no two students sold the same number of bags"

oh so 'no' sales count as same number of sales.


question should be interpreted then as 'did any student not sell' , 'how many' goes against the rule to begin with

ST1: 9 students earned 45.00 (no 2 earned the same amount)
case 1: 1-2-3 | 4-5-6 | 7-8-9 = 45.00 # who did not record a sale = 0
case 2: 0-1-2 | 3-5-7| 8-9-10 = 45.00 # who did not record a sale = 1
Not Sufficient

St2: Highest sold by any student = 10
case 1: 0-1-2 | 3-5-7| 8-9-10 Total = 45.00 # who did not record a sale = 1
case 2: 1-2-3 | 4-5-6 | 7-8-10 Total = 46.00 # who did not record a sale = 0
As we do not know the total collection from sale of popcorn, insufficient to say how many students did not record a sale.

Together: Only possible case = case 1: 0-1-2 | 3-5-7| 8-9-10 . Total = 45.00
# who did not record a sale = 1
Sufficient

That's right. Zero is still a number.
If Sue had zero sales, and Sam had zero sales, then Sue and Sam recorded the same number of sales (zero).

Asking, "How many students did not record a sale?" is the same as asking, "How many students recorded zero sales?"
