So I usually try to stay away from forums because of all the random information and scary things people post on here but from what I've seen, people are usually pretty helpful on GMAT forums. That's why I decided I'd share my story and hopefully help many more.
So I started off by buying tutoring hours and with Kaplan and was given a horrible tutor! I was so disappointed that I called the main office and immediately asked for a refund. They said that was fine but that I should really give it another shot with someone else. So, I sat in on one of their classes for free and found a gem. Not only did he show great mastery of the subject but he had different ways of looking at the problems, which made solving the problems extremely time efficient.
I could try to describe them all but he dropped Kaplan and just put up a new website called www.jumptheg.com , where he plans on sharing his techniques as well as offering tutoring in the Boston area so just go visit the website.
Oh and I also used the MGMAT books, which were really helpful, especially the SC and Number Properties ones.
As far as CATs go, Kaplan Quantitative sections are definitely the best predictors of how you will score on test day (after GMATPrep of course). For Verbal, I thought MGMAT CATs were the best predictors, even better than GMATPrep actually!
I prepared for roughly 4 months, 2 months part-time and 2 months 2-4 hours a day, and found the timeline perfect. I am disappointed with my Quantitative score but I don't have nearly enough time to retake as I now have to prepare for the LSAT (JD/MBA). Honestly the best piece of advice I could give anyone is to practice hard and review even harder. I would review a CAT the day after and would usually end up redoing every problem, all the while noting the question types I got wrong, e.g. DS Num. Prop., PS Rates, etc., in order to practice them throughout the week. Second best to that is to check out Nirmal (tutor previously mentioned) if you're in the Boston area. He's cheaper than any prep company or other private tutor and he really does rock. He was always available to talk, had a flexible schedule and was a true master of the subject!
