Let x = the ORIGINAL (regular) price

On Monday, the regular price of a widget was discounted by 25 percent.
If the price is discounted 25%, then we end up paying 75% of the ORIGINAL price
In other words, the discounted price = 75% of x = 0.75x

On Tuesday, the reduced price was discounted by 50 percent.
In other words, we end up paying 50% of the pre-discounted price
So: NEW discounted price = 50% of 0.75x = (0.50)(0.75x) = 0.375x

If the final price was $60, what was the regular price?
We can write: 0.375x = 60
Solve: x = 160

Answer: C

We let n = the regular price of the widget. We can create the equation:

n x 3/4 x 1/2 = 60

3n/8 = 60

3n = 480

n = 160

Answer: C
