Given: x < m < y
We have to determine how many integer values of m exist.
Let's take each statement one by one.
(1) x and y are positive integers.
Certainly insufficient.
(2) y - x = 6
Case 1: Say y = 10.5 and x = 4.5, then m = {10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4}; there are a total of 7 integer values of m.
Case 2: Say y = 10 and x = 4, then m = {9, 8, 7, 6, 5}; there are a total of 5 integer values of m.
No unique answer. Insufficient.
(1) and (2) together
Case 1 discussed above is not applicable here, thus, there are a total of 5 integer values of m. Sufficient.
The correct answer:
C
Hope this helps!
