five fledgling sea eagles

by jube » Sun Jul 04, 2010 3:54 am
Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975.

(A) bringing
(B) and brings
(C) and it brings
(D) and it brought
(E) and brought

I'm confused among A, B & E! I tried searching to see if this sentence has been discussed before but couldn't find anything. Source: OG 12

IMO A
in A, "bringing" which is a participle form of the verb - clearly refers to the preceding clause "Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer"

Hi jube--
I agree that this question is a confusing one! There is already a thread that addresses it, though: https://www.beatthegmat.com/is-og-explan ... 40956.html
Hope this helps; feel free to post any follow-up questions.

(A) bringing
(B) and brings ...... subject verb disagree
(C) and it brings ........... it has no referent
(D) and it brought ........... it has no referent
(E) and brought
note the comma before and ; the comma indicates that we need a clause after and .

A it is !

Its a cause and effect scenario. Whenever the effect of the first clause is to be highlighted in the succeeding one, Comma + VERBing is used.

In this scenario, the activity "Five fledgling sea eagles left" has brought the number of wild bries. Hence go for VERBing.
