was an anonymous translator and essayist of
formidably far-ranging scholarship.

B Before she had been the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, she was

C George Eliot has been the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, after such time as she was

D Before George Eliot became popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, she was

E George Eliot, before she was popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, had been

The correct answer here is A. However, I'm quite sure that we need past perfect here. Can anyone help?

Its very tempting!! BUT the use of word BEFORE ensures that you go with simple past.
Remember we should use past perfect only when we need to take care of the sequence of events, but here its already been taken care by using the word BEFORE.
