(A) of drug dependency and others’ prejudicial treatment as well.
(B) both of drug dependency and also of prejudicial treatment.
(C) both of drug dependency and also from prejudicial treatment.
(D) both of drug dependency but also from prejudicial treatment.
(E) both of drug dependency and of prejudicial treatment as well

OA is E

Definitely E follows the correct idiom : Both X and Y

But isn't the "as well" in the end makes it redundant?

what is wrong with A?
whether 'of' should be there before others' treatment?

E seems ok coz i think as per the structure ....to be free..both of.... and of....as well.
if in this statement second 'of' is not there then the statement would not contain as well. this is what i feel..

but if OA was not given, then i think i would select A.

Let me answer it for you,why A is wrong.

(A) of drug dependency and others’ prejudicial treatment as well.

Parallelism is not maintained.
Even if there was no "of" in the 1st sentence, still A would be wrong because....

Noun clause and possessive pronoun.

But my question is " as well" in E is fine or not?

then which one would be correct A or E? i feel that in that case A would be better choice..

It would be wise to Pick A then. But I am not pretty sure about that.

Hi All,

Can someone please help me in clearing one related doubt....

is it ok to shift "of" out of both.....

Basically what i mean.....are both of the following sentences equally correct in GMAT ?

E ) both "of" drug dependency and "of" prejudicial treatment as well
Modified E) "of" both drug dependency and prejudicial treatment as well

I encountered this type of split sometime back in one of the questions ...so a bit curious....

If the above "modified E" is wrong...can someone please tell why the same is wrong....on the face it looks to be following parallelism....i.e. of both X and Y....

these are all wrong. if you say "both...", then you are precluded from using "also" or "as well".

what is the source of this problem?
from now on, you should treat it as suspicious.

(this is clearly not an official problem)

if you have a parallel construction with 2 signal words, one before each part (such as both ... and ...), then it's pretty easy to detect parallelism: just look at the words following the first part ("both"), and look at the words following the second part ("and"). if they match, then you've got a parallel structure.

i'm assuming that the quote marks are just for emphasis. right?
(i.e., the same way in which you'd use, say, italics or underlines - do you know how to do those?)

Actually what I was asking is that...which one is correct in GMAT....

a) I like both going to movie and going to picnic
b) I like going to both movie and picnic.....

Are both of them ok...or one of the above is wrong ?

the one with "going" twice is a little obnoxious/wordy (it's unusual to see structures like this unless the parallel components are extremely long, justifying the repetition), but both of them are parallel and hence technically correct.

as well is redundant. but most importantly, sentence does not commit major grammatical fallacies. knowledge of idiom is being tested. the redundancy only has weight if all other things are equal, between two choices to which you have narrowed down.
