Hello:
I have several questions. I guess I should start by giving a little color on my background. I’m currently 29. I may apply for an MBA next fall or the year after. My are my stat’s
Education:
710 GMAT
Vanderbilt MS Finance, 3.8 gpa, Class of 2009
State school (finance major), 3.8 gpa, Class of 2005 summa cum laude
CFA: Passed LIII – will be charterholder by application time.
Military:
2 year stint as active duty enlisted man (combat arms) between high school and college. Enlisted to get college money
Post collegiate Work experience
1 yr as analyst for valuation consulting firm (ok)
22 months managing accounts receivable (weak for top 10)
Current position: Client Relations / Analyst position for asset management firm. I started in May (and I’m already seeing increased responsibility). I will have 1.5 yrs by next January. (strong)
I’m targeting schools in the top 10. My Targets are Columbia, MIT, UChicago, and Dartmouth. Fallback is Darden and my reach is Wharton.
Questions:
- Is 31 or 32 too old for those schools? Without the military time I would be in the average age range.
- Will applying after only 1.5 years on a new job be too soon? I’d prefer applying next year, but I would wait if my admissions chances significantly improved.
- How will my total experience be viewed? I will have 4-5 years of post collegiate experience at application time, which seems to be the norm. However, adding my army time brings me to about 7 yrs. Is that too much? Or will it be discounted because it is “Pre-collegiate”
- How much is the CFA an asset at “finance centric” schools such as Columbia and Chicago?
- How will my MS Finance be viewed? Will they like the fact that I have performed well at the graduate level? Or will they think of MSF+MBA as overkill?
And Finally: I plan to work with a consultant to hone my essays and interviews, and help determine my ideal schools. Given my background and a (hopefully) well crafted application, do I have a realistic shot at the schools above? Or should I be looking at schools in the 10-20 range?
I know this is a lot to answer. Thanks a lot. Maybe we’ll be working together next year!
