Estimation question

by efript » Thu Dec 11, 2008 10:51 am
i am not going to write out the entire question, but basically my gmat prep book is stating that the number of miles driven rounded to the nearest 10 miles is 290 and the number of gallons used rounded to the nearest gallon is 12. the range of miles driven and gasoline used I WOULD ASSUME would be between 285 - 294 and 11.5 - 12.4. BUT the book is using the numbers 284 - 295 and 11.4 - 12.5. please explain how 11.4 rounded to the nearest gallon is 12 and not 11, and likewise for the miles driven.

Someone else may want to chime in on this, but I seem to remember that one batch of the OG had typos in this question's answer choices. Have you owned your OG for awhile? I think this was a problem students were having in 2006. No one has asked me about it since then, so I assumed that GMAC fixed the error.

This is question #129 (page 169) of the Official Guide (11th edition).
The OA seems to round 11.4 to 12
I've had students ask me about this recently, so I think it might be in the latest versions as well.
Suffice it to say, it's a typo.
