Important: Sentences beginning with "like" or "unlike" set up a comparison. In these instances, stop at the comma and ask the question that the opening raises.

So, once we read, Unlike that of earlier works on slavery,... we should stop and ask . . .

"What is unlike that of earlier works on slavery?"

If the sentence is properly constructed, the part that immediately follows the comma will answer that question in a logical manner.

Reading on, we get ..."Blassingame's innovative study"
So, Blassingame's innovative study is unlike that of earlier works on slavery?
This doesn't make any sense. It suggest that Blassingame's study is unlike some study of earlier works on slavery.

Correct idiomatic Usage of Unlike is - Unlike A , B

Here A = earlier works on slavery , and B = Blassingame's...

Hence options (A) , (B) and (E) can be rejected...

We are left with Options (C) and (D).

(D) looks crisp and short hence I will choose (D) over (C)...
