charge for the first one mile

If the cab charge for the first one mile is $1 and every subsequent 1/5th of a mile or fraction thereof is charged at 'a' cents, what is the total charge payable in cents for a distance of 'b' miles where 'b' is a whole number?
A. 1 + (b - 1) 5 a
B. 5 a b
C. 100 + (b - 1) 5 a
D. 100 + a b
E. 100 + (b - 1) a

charge for 1st mile = 1$=100 cents
after 1st mile charge for 1/5 th mile = a cents => charge for every mile after 1st mile =5a cents

charge for b miles = charge for 1st mile +charge for (b-1) miles
=100+(b-1)5a

so ANS :C

Sanju,
I see that solution is already posted. However whenever you come across such questions where answer involves ONLY VARIABLES, then you can plug in random values.

So lets us say that a = 1 cents(1 mile 5a = 5 cents), and b = 2 miles
Now find the charge: 100 + (2-1)* 5 = 105

Check the values in the options and only C satisfies it.
