Enemy’s new ship

by karmayogi » Fri Nov 28, 2008 7:08 am
The question I am going to ask has already been asked on this forum: https://www.beatthegmat.com/i-though-bei ... t1323.html

However, the focus of the thread was on 'it' and 'being'. While I think, there is one more critical point that people missed in the earlier thread. So posting the question again.

Source 1000 SC
169. Because the enemy’s new ship is the quietest and it is therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed by the military as a threat to security.
(A) and it is therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed
(B) it is therefore the most elusive of submarines, and it has increased the view
(C) and therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed
(D) and therefore it is the most elusive of submarines, there is an increasing view
(E) therefore being the most elusive of submarines, it is increasingly viewed

OA C

One suggestion: We all are always ready to hog on any SC question. At the same time, I feel, we can correct the grammatical mistakes in our comments also. That way we will also improve in our writting skill.

Nice suggestion, usually you get the replies according to the title of the topic you choose.

I hope this time we'll hear some discussion on that particular sentence & not on grammar in general ;)

Are you suggesting for a better title?

Ok, doesn't seems to be many takers :( . Let me only put forth my reasoning and let me know whether it's correct.

A noun modifier must not contain a subject. The opening clause is acting as an adjective, modifying pronoun ‘it’ in the second clause. Hence, the opening clause can’t have ‘it’, which makes it an independent clause. And if it’s an independent clause then two independent clauses must be separated by a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction.

Only C fits the bill - opening clause is a dependent adjectival clause, properly modifying the pronoun 'it'.
