Advertisements....

by jitendra_mulchandani » Sat Apr 10, 2010 8:49 am
Advertisement : Like Danaxil, all headache pills can stop your headache. But when you are in pain, you want relief right away. Danaxil is for you-no headache pill stops pain more quickly.
Evelyn and Jane are each suffering from a headache. Suppose Evelyn takes Danaxil and Jane takes its leading competitor.

Which one of the following can be properly concluded from the claims in the advertisement?
(A) Evelyn's headache pain will be relieved, but Jane's will not.
(B) Evelyn's headache pain will be relieved more quickly than Jane's.
(C) Evelyn's headache will be relieved at least as quickly as Jane's.
(D) Jane's headache pain will be relieved at the same time as is Evelyn's.
(E) Jane will be taking Danaxil for relief from headache pain.

We can find similarity in the premise wording with the wording present in the answer B.
Only B and C can be counted as contenders. C, however, uses as quickly as which is rather soft statement. But premise uses very strong wording no headache pill that goes inline with option B

If no pill provides faster relief, there exists the possibility that other pills could match it in terms of speed, and the leading competitor could be one of these pills. One cannot conclude that B is true, but C is a logical statement

I would still bet for B. For I know that statement no headache pill stops pain more quickly[than Danaxil]. is presented as a direct comparison with the Danaxil pill.

OA pls ? and possibly OE also..:)

That no pill acts more quickly does not mean that no pill acts as quickly

OA is C.

The argument states a special condition when Danaxil will be more effective than it's competitors:
when you are in pain, you want relief right away. Danaxil is for you

The argument states that Evelyn and Jane are each suffering from a headache, it does not specify that Evelyn is suffering from pain as well.

hence C.

Is there such a thing as a painless headache?

time taken by Danaxil = X
time taken by other pill = Y

"no headache pill stops pain more quickly than Danaxil."
X <= Y.==>i.e, time taken by Danaxil will be less than or equal to time taken by some other pills.

In other words, "Evelyn's headache will be relieved at least as quickly as Jane's".
C should be OA.
