Reading through the responses above I think I got luck with D. :) Came down to between D and E.

I used the approach that only D fits best for the subject Elizabeth... and "she" seems redundant in E.

Good responses above though. Learnt through them. :)

A & B out - 'as she was' is unnecessary for a noun modifier.
C - 'in being' wordy ; 'had scandalized' - past tense is sufficient.
D - correct
E - 'she' redundant ; 'in suggesting' must be 'by suggesting'.

Moreover, in a subjunctive mood 'suggesting' must be followed by 'that+be verb', which makes D correct.

In B and C: "her suggestion of drunkenness being..." and "with the suggestion of drunkenness being..." - awkward - GMAT doesn't like this kind of structure
A: "in her suggestion" is grammatically wrong - at least it should be "by her suggestion"
E: "she scandalized many of her" - "she" is redundant

In B and C, suggestion of drunkenness implies that DRUNKENNESS is what Elizabeth Cady Stanton was SUGGESTING. What Elizabeth Cady Stanton suggested was that drunkenness be made sufficient cause for divorce. Quite a different meaning. Eliminate B and C.

The correct answer is D.

in the pattern
main clause+by doing
the subject of the main clause perform action presented by "by doing". we do not use "possessive+action noun" such as "her sugestion" for this pattern. so, choice A, B and C are gone.
