aakanksha003,

Top 5 schools may be difficult, but your unusual career track and gender will help you. Freelancing will count as work experience, especially given that it's related to your career. You can spin freelancing as entrepreneurship and say how typical it is in your industry. A 680-700 score (80th percentile or above in quant and verbal scores) will put you in the running at top 10 schools assuming your GPA is the equivalent of, say, a 3.4 or higher in the U.S.

One potential issue given your top 10 ambitions is how much leadership you'll be able to show. Head of Design sounds promising but does it involve coordinating others? Similarly, your community involvements sound fine, but don't sound like there's leadership involved.

Your modeling adds to the distinctiveness of your profile, so you will certainly stand out. The question then will be: numbers (GMAT, GPA) and leadership track record. Assuming the GPA is high enough and that there is leadership you could perhaps aim for schools like Columbia, London Business School, NYU Stern, UCLA, Cornell, Kellogg, etc.

Hope this helps,

You should aim for a score that gives you an 80th percentile or above in the math and verbal, but if your GPA is the equivalent of a 3.4 to 3.6 in the U.S. and you have strong leadership then you might be OK if your scores are in the 70th percentile. Because you come from a creative industry they will look for strength in quant skills, so you should aim for the highest possible quant score, 720 overall would be great, as would 85th percentile in the quant.

Aakanksha,

To have a realistic chance at HBS /Stanford, target atleast 700 in GMAT, and preferably as close to 750 as possible. Also, your work experience is on the lower side. While it will help you that you are not from over represented IT pool, still, your work experience is on the lower side and hence you should use this time to get some leadership opportunities at work which you can leverage in the position. I believe launching Tanishq in the US certainly has some potential to be developed as a impactful point that you might want to further Polish on.

71% is good, however, because of your undergrad institution and field of study, the adcom will be taking a close look at the quant section of your GMAT. You can certainly count consulting as professional work experience as long as it is one! However, if you did not earn anything during this period, it might be a little tricky to pass it as a professional experience because application form specifically ask for salary information under each job position. Your goals are well aligned to what you have been doing till now and your extracurricular, if told the right way, should definitely add some more substance to your profile.

We have specifically worked with Indian applicants so please feel free to reach out to us if you have any more questions.

Good luck!

Hi bizschoolprep,

Many thanks for evaluating my profile.

Infact I earned more while freelancing compared to what I was earning during my job at Tanishq.
But those payments were given somtimes by cheque and sometimes by cash.
Like you mentioned, I need to give salary details.

Do I need to show some documents for salary proof? Or an account statement?
Please answer this question for me.

Also, I have another job offer with a jewellery startup(small company of 10) , where they are asking me to handle the entire design/merchandising department, coordinating with factories in China and buyers in the US. Its sort of an entrepreneurial role. Should I join them? But the negative part will be that then I will have experience in 3 companies during a 4 years work ex. Please advise.

Regards,
Aakanksha

Aakansha,

Regarding the salary, at the time of the application, you don't need to show any proof. There will be application fields that you have to fill (starting salary and ending salary, etc) and that's it. Don't bother too much about the proof etc as long as you are putting the right information. Even if a random background check is done, you can always use the references with whom you worked in the past. Not everything is white and black, and adcom understands that. However, just be truthful and don't put any information that can spoil your candidacy.

Your decision to take a job should be taken from the perspective if you think it is in the right direction for you. If your decisions on work side align with your career goals, it may even help you to tell a more solid story. The bottomline is that it is upto you whether you want to look at the new job position as a weakness or a strength. From your description, it looks a great role for you but then you are the best judge. Feel free to email/PM us if you want to discuss it in detail.

Good luck!
