I narrowed it down (whether this is correct or not...) to choices C and E. I'm going to settle on C as E might be correct, but it probably complicates the sentence unnecessarily.

I hope everybody now clearly understands the real reason why the correct answer is C.

Do not force your logic to achieve an answer. You may get it right this time (lucky),but you will surely get it wrong the next time.
Hey Risabh,

Can we use who for tribes, as used in this case? Could you throw some light on "who"'s usage. I had thought who can be used only for people

The answer is C as between is ruled out and interacted with themselves looks an awkward construction.

C

parallel construction: with ... than .. with..
"among" - is a noteworthy word here!

hi,

option E has the wrong idiom phrased. Also, the sentence is not constructed well with respect to Parallelism. Remember that GMAT makes 2 or more errors in the wrong options. If one can identify at least one error to make the option wrong, one can easily spot the right answer!

C: has both the right idiom "interacted with" and parallel construction, "with..than.. with."
Ans: [C]

The KwakiutI recognized one social unit larger than the tribe-the confederacy, which was a cluster of loosely knit, informally related neighboring tribes who interacted with themselves more often than between other tribes.

A. tribes who interacted with themselves more often than between

B. tribes who interacted among each other more often than among

C. tribes who interacted with one another more often than with

D. tribes, interacting among each other more often than between

E. tribes, interacting among one another more often than with

Lets look to the meaning

A social group is recognized and this social group interact more with themselves than with other tribes.

Error Analysis
tribes who interacted with themselves more often than between other tribes.
Tribes - sub and interacted - verb
- Between - is used for 2 or more distinguished entity. Among is used when you are generalizing ( more than 2)
Again here we have parallelism error With themselves than with - with missing

POE
A - is wrong based on above analysis
B- Each other is for 2 person. But meaning states that they talk more with their community.
C - makes lots of sense
D - Interacting is modifying the complete clause and make the meaning incorrect
E - Same as D

My take is C

"Interact with" is idiomatically correct

The answer is C. I made the decision plainly based on the fact that "interact among" sounded wrong.

Secondly, "interacted with themselves" implies that each member of the group interacted with himself or herself. And that's ridiculous.

Everyone says C is the correct answer, but I was thinking C is not correct since "WHO" cannot refer to tribes and is just used for referring to people. Am I wrong?

1st split: "interacting" vs "who interacted"
Need to relative clause w/o comma to modifies "neighboring tribes" => cross D and E
2nd split: "between" vs "among" vs "with"
"other tribes" should go with "with"
=> C
