Hello,

The below is from the 10th edition of OG. Unfortunately, I don't have the answer with me.

What was the average number of miles per gallon of gasoline for a car during a certain trip?

1) The total cost of the gasoline used by the car for the 180 mile trip was $12.00
2) The cost of the gasoline used by the car for the trip was $1.20 per gallon

I am thinking that the answer is [spoiler](E)[/spoiler]

Using 1) I am getting $15/- of gasoline per mile. However, this is not what we want. 2) is insufficient as well.

Any thoughts on this? Thanks a lot.

Let the avg number of miles traveled during a certain trip = D
and the number of gallons of gasoline used during that trip = G

according to the question , we need to find "D/G"

Statement 1 INSUFFICIENT

It provides the value of D and the cost of G.

statement 2 INSUFFICIENT

It provides the cost of per gallon of gasoline. no information about G or D

Statement 1 & 2 combined

we can calculate G using both the statements
=>G = $12/$1.2 = 10
and we have the value of D from the 1st statement

Hence we can now find the value of D/G = 180/10 = 18
So SUFFICIENT
Hence the answer is C

Thanks for the explanation. Sorry, I am not that good at these average problems. Is this correct:

Avg. number of miles per gallon of gasoline = Total Miles/Total Gallons

Let, total miles = D
and total gallons = G

So, Avg. number of miles per gallon of gasoline = D/G


Statement 1
180 miles - $12.00
1 mile - x

So, x = $1/15

$1/15 for 1 mile. No info about Total Gallons. Insufficient

Statement 2

$1.20 per Gallon

No info about Total Miles and Total Gallons. Insufficient


However, I am not clear after this point how we are getting the total gallons value. Can you please help? Thanks a lot.

hi Sri,

after combining the two statements, we know the total cost of gasoline used and cost of per gallon of gasoline.

So, # of gallons of gasoline = Total cost of gasoline/Cost of per gallon of gasoline

=> G = $12/$1.2 = 10
