GMAT Prep-Statistics Problem.

by lokesh r » Sun Oct 10, 2010 12:40 pm
A set of 15 different integers has a median of 25 and range of 25, what is the greatest possible integer that could be in the set.
1) 32
2) 37
3) 40
4) 43
5) 50

Ans. d

I solved the question as below

let set be x, x1...25....y

given y-x=25
y=x+25.

Now to make y maxmimum, we have take maximum possible value of x that could be 25
so y=25+25=50, where am i going wrong? pls help

Your answer would be right except that the question tells us that the integers in the set are all *different*. If the question didn't say that, your answer is correct. Here, if 25 is the median, there are seven elements smaller than 25, and the largest values the eight smallest things in the set can have are:

18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

So if the range is 25, the largest value possible for the largest element is 18+25 = 43.

I think i am hurrying myself to solve problem..rather than reading question carefully...thanks very much..
