John and Mary and their Financials

by bhumika.k.shah » Wed Feb 03, 2010 9:56 am
John and Mary own stock in a certain company. Does John own more shares than Mary?

S1: Mary owns more than 500 shares of the company's stock.
S2: The number of shares of the company's stock that John owns is 400 less than twice the number of shares of the company's stock that Mary owns.

??? i know this is a Y/N kind of question ... but still combing two statements won't give us a definite answer right ????

Say m is the no of shares Mary owns and j is the number of shares John owns

1) m = 500 , Insuff
2) j = 2m -400, insuff

combining j = 2*500 -400 = 600

j>m

Sufficient, C for me

Ooops! I have to start reading the questions.. Sorry for the wrong solution

But, having said that, I think C is the answer

for a value of m greater than 500, m<2m-400

at m =500 j=600

at m =1000 j = 1600

so m is always less than j; just about enough to prove that C is the answer

if

m> 2m-400

2m-400<m

2m<m+400

m<400

so for m<400; m> 2m-400

but we already know m>500 and hence m<2m-400; hope that is clear

Absolutely - under the given conditions, if we combine 1&2, j will always be greater than m

Blending (1) and (2) is a must here to try an answer to the comparison.

If I have killed more than 5 lions of this jungle, and you have killed more than 6 lions of the same jungle; then absolutely no one on earth would be able to decide on which of us is a bigger hunter unless the total lion population in the jungle before we two entered into the game is known to be exactly 13, and it is also that all those 13 were killed by we two people only. And then they would say that you were the better huntsman. But, if I have killed more than 5 lions of this jungle, and you have killed 6 or more lions of the same jungle; and the total lion population in the jungle before we two entered into the game is known to be exactly 13, and it is also that all those 13 were killed by we two people only...then? Crown in Cloud!!

Same is the case here in your problem. If John and Mary respectively own J and M number of the company's share, then

(1) M > 500 or 2 M ≥ 1002 blended with (2) J = 2 M - 400 or J ≥ 602 needs more relevant information to avoid
E
.

I think, it is just about enough information to conclude that the answer is C. I did not understand your statement, to be honest
