Adam and Beth each drove from Smallville to Crown City by different routes. Adam drove at an average speed of 40 miles per hour and completed the trip in 30 minutes. Beth’s route was 5 miles longer and it took her 20 minutes longer than Adam to complete the trip. How many miles per hour was Beth’s average speed on this trip?

distance for adam=40*1/2=20 miles
so distance for beth=25 miles
beth took 30+20=50 minutes
25 miles in 50 minutes
so 30 miles in an hour...answer is 30miles/h
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

Adam drove 40m/h for 1/2hr: 40*(1/2) = 20mi.

Beth drove 20+5 miles
time for Beth is 1/3+1/2 = 5/6 hr

avg speed = 25/(5/6)

25*(6/5) = 30mi/hr
