On Flashcards - Pg 14 - on examples of "Less", I am confused.

1) "..less than 35 mi...". Aren't 0 to 34 miles countable, so we should use "fewer' instead of less.

2)"..spent less than $100" Anything between $0 and $100 is countable.

3) "..town spent less than 95%...", again any % between 0% to 95% is countable.

Shouldn't we use "fewer" in all the above examples instead of "less"? I am sorry but I am just confused!

Vivek, you are right in pointing out that countable nouns should use the comparative form "fewer" as opposed to "less".

But as MGMAT SC says, for example, money is a countable noun. But we do not say one money , two money etc., though we can still count money! It is a unit and the rule when unit nouns are used is different.

Now, "fewer than $100" means that the number of dollar bills, say $1 bills (imagine 100 rupee notes), is actually less than 100. On the other hand, when you say "less than $100" means that the total money you have including all the kinds of dollar bills ($1, $10, $5, etc,.) doesn't sum up to 100 (imagine you have one 1 rupee note, two 20rs notes and one 50rs note; total 91rs).

Same is the case for other units like "litres" (unit for volume), miles(unit for distance), etc,. They are all units. You will not say "fewer than 5 litres"/"the distance between two points is fewer than 5kms" but "less than 5 litres"/"the distance between two points is less than 5kms".
