A Manhattan SC problem

For all her asserted scorn of such books, Jeanette had a bookcase full of romance
novels.
(A) For all her asserted scorn of such books,
(B) Having always asserted scorn for such books,
(C) All such books were, she asserted, scorned, and
(D) Asserting that all such books were scorned,
(E) In spite of assertions of scorning all such activities,

OA is A. Are B and D better than A? The second part of the sentence started with 'Jeanette'.

Hi edwardc,

This SC is based on modification rules. Here we have an opening phrase followed by a comma; that phrase is descriptive and modifies that noun that comes next (in this case, "Jeanette"). The correct answer has to use the proper grammar to describe/modify a person.

Answer A does describe a person (notice the use of the pronoun "her").
Answer B could describe a person, but might not (perhaps it describes a company or a group).
Answer D could describe a person, but might not (same problem as answer B).

In an SC, vague language isn't considered correct. Here, the modifier has to perfectly match the modified word (and vice-versa).

Final Answer: A

Pay attention to MEANING as well as grammar.
The phrase for all means in spite of.
Thus, the intention of the original sentence is to express a CONTRAST:
IN SPITE OF her asserted scorn of such books, Jeanette had a bookcase full of romance
novels.
B and D do not express the required contrast.
