A closed cylindrical tank contains 36n cubic feet of water and is filled to half its capacity. When the tank is placed upright on its circular base on level ground,the height of the water in the tank is 4 feet. When the tank is placed on its side on level ground, what is the height, in feet, of the surface of the water above the ground?

Volume of cylinder = pi*r^2*h = 72pi
Hence r^2*h = 72
Height of the tank is 4*2 = 8 feet
Hence r^2 = 72/8 = 9
So r=3

Water should be of the height of radius when placed on ground with its surface. Hence the height should be 3.

Under the assumption that the height of the water when the cylinder is placed laterally will be the radius of its base
we need to find 'r'
at height of 4 feet... the volume is 36 cubic feet

pie * r^2 * 4 = 36 * pie

r = 3
